Not only is this piece of news an important sign of the times, it is also an unecessary alliterative headline!

A recent poll by Q Magazine has discovered that ELOs “Livin’ Thing” tops the poll of songs we’re ashamed to say we like.  I prefer Mr Blue Sky myself!

The top ten in full:

1. ELO – ‘Livin’ Thing’
2. Boston – ‘More Than A Feeling’
3. S Club 7 – ‘Don’t Stop Movin”
4. 10cc – ‘I’m Not In Love’
5. Gary Glitter – ‘Rock’n’Roll Part 2’
6. Foreigner – ‘Cold As Ice’
7. Billy Idol – ‘Rebel Yell’
8. Status Quo – ‘Whatever You Want’
9. Gerry Rafferty – ‘Baker Street’
10. Gloria Gaynor – ‘I Will Survive’

BluntAccording to a recent poll, James Blunt “fourth most annoying thing” ever! Blunt (not rhyming slang apparently), who has had considerable success in the last 12 months, has possible suffered from over-exposure, with only cold callers, caravans and queue jumpers beating him in the poll. Maybe this is one top ten Rob and Jon at TOTP could cover!?

Top of the Pops is no more June 21, 2006

Top of the PopsWell, the inevitable finally happened – "Top of the Pops" has finally been axed after 42 years. I can't say I'm surprised. I probably stopped watching about 5 years ago and even then it wasn't very often. I found that the quality had dissapeared, along with the consistency that we'd come to expect from TOTP. BBC, in their wisdom, kept playing with schedules, presenters and formats to the point where it was no longer recognisable. I'm not saying they should have kept it as it was – indeed with MTV and the like it did seem rather outdated, but they couldn't find the right way to show new music on primetime telly, and other programmes like dramas and comedy had more prevalence on the two BBC channels.

Maybe the BBC should look at their own music channel – I used to rather like the now long-gone music and comedy channel, UK Play (from the UKTV family which became UKG2 when they dropped the music). The BBC usually does things so well, and their archive of music clips must be fantastic, so they should be able to find some way of putting it all together to make an up-to-date music package, whether its a single programme or a seperate channel. Live performances always go down well – maybe they could record Radio 1's Live Lounge sessions to be broadcast on TV (there have been some amazing cover versions to come out of them). Apart from Later with Jools Holland I cant think of any other BBC music programme so come on BBC, lets have some more.

At the moment at work I'm listening to Chill. Chill is a great web radio station playing a brilliant mix of relaxing chillout tunes 24/7, with no DJs and no adverts spoiling the ambience. Its also available on DAB and digital TV.

We like to lie back, set the mobile phone to "silent" and listen to music like Morcheeba, Air, Moby, Sigur Ros, Beth Orton, Goldfrapp, Emiliana Torrini, 4Hero, Bebel Gilberto, Massive Attack, Aqualung, Damien Rice or Jack Johnson.

The BBC has reported that the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has shut down Tiscali's Juke Box service, in another example which shows the lack of understanding between the record labels (or those who represent them) and consumers and thier behaviour. Tiscali even said that music purchases from their online store were up 30% since launching Juke Box.
